ORTHOKERATOLOGY
Imagine seeing clearly during the day without needing to use glasses or contact lenses!
Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is the overnight wear of customised contact lenses that eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day. This non-surgical procedure uses rigid contact lenses to gently re-shape the cornea (front of the eye) whilst sleeping. The result is clear vision upon waking the next day.
This is a great alternative to LASIK surgery and is mainly used to correct myopia (shortsightedness), however can also be used to correct hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism. The corneal reshaping that occurs with Ortho-K is completely reversible; hence the need to wear the lenses to bed every night.
We particularly recommend considering Orthokeratology for those people who play a lot of sport, work in dusty environments or experience dry eye symptoms with regular contact lenses.
Recent research has also found that Ortho-K has the added benefit of reducing the progression of myopia by up to 50% in school aged children. By slowing down the myopia and hence the growth of the eyeball, we reduce the risks of eye health problems in adulthood. The higher the myopia, the higher the risks of –
- Retinal detachment,
- Myopic macular degeneration,
- Glaucoma, and
- Cataract.
